Peking Autumn Palimpsest

故都的秋

This work expresses the spirit of Beijing’s literati in the history of a hundred years ago (specifically the 20th period of the Republic of China), and I find that they have something in common with today’s literati,and one of the distinctive focuses is the loneliness of the spirit, and yet this loneliness has its rainbow in it – their works of art. The Palimpsest series is to present the spiritual loneliness of today’s China, which is almost never to be regained after being disconnected from the spirit of traditional Chinese culture, as well as the anxiety, depression, desires, and bewilderment of many people’s lives at this moment, which rises to the pain of loneliness of not being able to form a dialog with the outside world and not being able to form an action. However, in this lonely pain there is a hope- observer’s point of view. Recording the present from the observer’s eye, the present will become “a history” because of the work. Since there is a saying that “history can be objective but mainly subjective”, then “a history” can also be transformed into “a kind of art history”, which I am using to record our time, and to think and explore today’s Beijing.

这个作品表现的是北京在一百年前的历史中的(特指民国20时期)文人精神,我发现他们和今天的文人有共通之处,其中一个鲜明的焦点就是精神寂寞,然而这寂寞中又有它的彩虹——他们的艺术作品。 故都系列,是为了呈现今天的中国在和传统中国文化的精神断联后,几乎是永不复得的精神上的寂寞,以及许多人此刻生活里的焦虑、抑郁、欲望和茫然的心情,它上升为无法与外界形成对话以及无法构成行动的孤独的痛苦。然而,在这孤独的痛苦中又包含了一种希望的——观察者视角。从观察者的角度记录当下,当下会因为作品而成为“一种历史”,既然有“历史可以是客观的,但主要是主观的”这一种说法,那么“一种历史”也可以转变为“一种艺术史”,我在用它记录我们的时代,也用它来深入地思考和探索今天的北京。

Peking Spring Palimpsest

故都的春

This work follows the form of Peking Autumn Palimpsest, focusing on the exploration of the act of walking, using sound and instructions to explore movement in the mood, restoring the landscape to itself, in which we merely pass through, while the landscape itself represents voices of the times, nowadays these voices have been annihilated and ignored beneath the heart current of the new era. Using sound effects to present the philosophical thoughts behind Lu Xun’s text, history is rediscovered and perceived in the architecture using walking and sound effects.

这个作品沿袭了《故都的秋》的创作形式,将创作核心聚焦在行走的行为探索上,用声音和指令探索情动(movement in the mood),将景观还原为其本身,我们只是在其中穿过,虽然景观本身代表了一种时代的声音,而如今这声音已湮没于新时代的心流下面而被忽略了。用声音效果呈现鲁迅文本后面的哲学思想,利用行走和声音现实让历史在建筑中重新被发现、被感知。

Sky Hope

天空之愿

This work has gone through three transformations of art forms, from abstract painting to poetry, from poetry to movements, and from movements to singing. In the transformation of forms, it is always centered on the theme of “Sky Hope”, which is the name of the painting exhibition, the name of the poetry collection, the name of the singing piece and the name of the whole performance, so it is a comprehensive performance work, which is performed in the space of the art space, transforming the painting into a spatial performance.

这个作品经历了三次艺术形式的转化,从抽象绘画到诗歌,从诗歌到舞蹈,再从舞蹈到歌唱。在形式的转化中,始终围绕“天空之愿”这个主题,它既是画展的名字,也是诗集的名字,歌唱曲目及至整个表演的名字,故这是一部综合性表演作品,表演的地点在艺术空间,将绘画转化为空间表演。

Dramas of growth

生长的戏剧

In the process of translating poetic open and condensed texts, its ideas and images are growing, taking sideturns, are disappearing, there are misunderstandings and sometimes they are getting out of hand and find their own identity. “Dramas of growth” shows the process of translating 2 poems from Chinese into German. The extreme semantical polyphony every Chinese character carries, is met with music, video and calligraphy, all exploring aspects of meaning, influencing and translating each other in shifting relations. In this “Dramas of growth” follows a musical counterpoint logic brought upon the text and pictures.  

在翻译具有诗意的开放文本和浓缩文本的过程中,其思想和意象也在不断增长,出现偏倾、消失和误解,有时甚至失控并因此找到它们自己的身份。《生长的戏剧》这个作品,展示了将两首诗从中文翻译成德语的过程。每个汉字都承载着极端的语义复调,并伴随着音乐、影像和书法,探索意义的各个方面,并在转移的关系中相互影响和翻译。《生长的戏剧》中的文字和图像采用了音乐对位逻辑。

For the New One

This piece is an improvisation that was immediately transformed by stumbling upon an open space in a theater in Antwerp, Belgium. A conversation with the interesting substances in the environment, a dialog with the various sounds emanating from underneath the space, and an immediate translation into a movement performance.

这个作品是在比利时的安特卫普的一间剧院中,偶然发现的一片开阔空间,于是立刻转化的即兴表演。与环境中有趣的物质进行对话,与空间下发出的各种声音进行对话,并立刻转化为动作表演。

My Poor Marat

我可怜的马拉特

This is the first work I have created, taken from the Soviet playwright Arbudzhov’s theater play “My Poor Marat”, the text is abridged. It vividly depicts the love story between three teenagers growing out of the ruins after World War II, whose love is born out of the pursuit of their ideals and dies because of the destruction of those ideals. The stage treatment utilized the Soma Cube to present St. Petersburg, which was destroyed after the Battle of Leningrad. The audience sits around it, in very close proximity, to watch the actors straining to move and reorganize the stage set, as the giant wooden blocks change slowly throughout the performance.

这是我创作的第一部作品,取材自前苏联剧作家阿尔布卓夫的戏剧剧本《我可怜的马拉特》,文本有删节,它生动地描绘了二战后从废墟中生长起来的三个少年之间的爱情故事,他们的爱情因为对理想的追求而诞生,也因为理想的破灭而消亡。舞台处理利用索玛立方体(Soma Cube)来呈现列宁格勒战役之后被摧毁的圣彼得堡。舞台设计就使用它来呈现剧本中的室内场景,卧室、客厅、废墟。观众围绕它而坐,在非常近的距离中,观看演员吃力地搬动和重组舞台场景,木质的巨型积木在表演中徐徐变化。
