She has a renowned international reputation as one of the leading independent program director and producer in China. In recent years, Dandan Liang has used theater concepts and techniques as tools for children’s theater education, designing a bilingual history theater workshop series in collaboration with Beijing’s humanities education institution, The Courtyard Institute. At the same time, she co-directed China’s first youth operas The Magic Flute (2022) and La Traviata (2023) with Caterina Panti Liberovici, director of the Frankfurt Opera House, which were premiered in full English by young people aged 7-14 at the Beijing Concert Hall and the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.
As a poet, her collections Suite: From Hong Kong to Beijing (2016) and Sky Hope (2022) were published by Independent Chinese PEN Center (ICPC) in Hong Kong and Washington, DC.
Since 2020, Liang Dandan has entered creative practice. Her four-part series performances, Peking Spring, Summer, Autumn & Winter Palimpsest, are collaborating with composers, dancers, painters, and cinematographers which combines her interest in Chinese history with her exploration of theater art in terms of the experience of physicality and the structure of the text.
She departs from the theatre to perceive the human condition in urban and nature spaces, exploring the relationship between performance and audience in sound and visual interactions, and exploring how to reorganize time and space through the actions of the audience in the structure of the play.
